A440 or Concert A or Middle A is the 440 Hz tone that serves as the standard for musical pitch. A440 is the musical note A above middle C (C4). The term literally means that the A above Middle C = 440 vibrations per second.

A440 is the standard for tuning forks which many people still use to tune their guitars. The tuning fork is gently banged on a reasonably hard surface (often one’s knee) and then the stem is pressed against the soundboard of the guitar. See our demonstration video on tuning your guitar with a tuning fork.

We also have an A440 “Ring Tone” for your mobile telephone. No, we do not expect you to use it as a ringtone, however, if you put it into your phone as “A440″ you will then always have a reference tone, or digital tuning fork in your pocket wherever you go – even if you have no Internet connection. You can simply parse your ringtones and play your A440 tone to tune an instrument wherever you are.
